Bad news, popstars: Shane Filan has used up all the metaphors

As Luminumford & Sheerans-type pop songs go, Shane Filan’s new single is great. Also, it’s got a video which is both prescient (he assumes the role of a wedding singer) and high on drama (he gets stuck behind a tractor).

But it’s not all good news. Think of all the great metaphors and similes we’ve had in 2013.

  • “I got the eye of the tiger.” (Katy Perry did not actually have a tiger’s eye.)
  • “You loved me back to life.” (Celine Dion’s corpse was not actually re-energised by someone shagging it.)
  • “I came in like a wrecking ball.” (Miley Cyrus was not actually swinging around oh hang on)

Well the next year will bring us no similar joys, because Shane Filan’s new single uses up pop music’s allegory quota for at least the next twelve months.

First off, the single is called ‘Knee Deep In My Heart’.

KNEE
DEEP
IN
MY
HEART

That’s an unusual name for a song isn’t it?

Moving on, the song’s conceit involves Shane being a sort of ‘love detective’ who catches his lover “red handed, knee deep in my heart” and there’s also some stuff about going undercover, having alibis, doing time, perfect crimes, having no defence, being guilty as charged, leaving “fingerprints on my soul” and so on. There’s also chat about Shane spinning round upside down in the dark (which sounds a bit S&M-dungeony to be frank), life running past him etc etc etc.

It’s quite something. See for yourself in the video, but be warned, the song is dangerously catchy and we’ve watched this five times in a row already.
